The Four Seasons: a monumental Sèvres style gilt porcelain vase
Style of Sèvres (French, founded 1738)
£75,000
On a beige ground with iridescent green bands, this magnificent ormolu mounted porcelain vase depicts the four seasons in a series of stunning medallions.
Of baluster form, and set against an unusual beige ground banded with green, this magnificent monumental ormolu-mounted porcelain vase is crafted and painted in Sèvres style, and was made at the end of the nineteenth century.
Painted iridescently, it is emblazzoned with four beautiful monochrome medallions that depict in each frame a maiden and putti, which are emblematic of the Four Seasons. Throughout, the piece is heightened foliate gilt elements in relief, and the four mains cartouches are united by a frieze and set on a band of fruit, which includes grapes, strawberries, peaches and plums.
The neck and socle of the vase feature two further monochromatic friezes of putti, some of which hold emblems relating to the theme of love, and they mirror the images of the seasons in the en grisaille style of their execution. The lid is inscribed to the underside with interlaced letters L and S in underglaze blue and 'FRANCE' also features in underglaze red.
