Set in a carved giltwood frame, this elegant set consists of nine oval-shaped cameo plaques, comprising six classical profile portraits. The gods and goddesses shown include Athena, Mars, Mercury, two Bacchantes and a further female with a lyre.
There are also three figural subjects, comprising Juno, probably Laetitia, and another that likely depicts the Judgement of Solomon. Such works as these were popular during the Grand Tour, a time when wealthy aristocrats and travellers from Northern Europe journeyed to Italy, with an eye to see the great historical monuments and Classical heritage, and would look to take something worthy of their visit back with them. These fine cameos, exceptionally carved and with superb detailing, are some of the best finds of this sort.
