Modelled on the Torre de Belém in Lisbon, Portugal, the circular dial set within the castle tower shaped case, its suspension stamped 'Pons-Paris, 1827', the fortified tower flanked to the left by a harbour with two rocking ships, the ships' mechanism stamped 'Oilaine Arri & Solon Crerrier/ De Dieppe/ no. 466', upon a mahogany ebonised stepped base with gilded pillars to the corners.
The Torre de Belém is a fortified tower in Lisbon, Portugal, which was created in the early 16th Century. The tower was commissioned by King John II of Portugal, who intended the the building to act as part of a defence system on the river Tagus, and to be a ceremonial gateway to Lisbon. The beautiful Torre de Belém still stands today, and is now classified as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
