French antique Rococo style gilt bronze pedestal after Caffieri

This remarkable antique pedestal is designed after a model by Jacques Caffieri (1732–1806), a celebrated French sculptor renowned for his masterful bronze work. Caffieri, alongside other skilled artisans, contributed to the creation of the Passemant astronomical clock, presented to King Louis XV in 1753. This extraordinary timepiece, at the time referred to as ‘un miracle de science’, became an iconic masterpiece, inspiring many 19th century cabinetmakers. During this period, ébénistes reinterpreted historic designs, blending past artistry with contemporary craftsmanship - an approach beautifully exemplified in this superb pedestal. 

Grand in scale, the stand features a grey veined marble top, resting above a richly ornamented gilt bronze frame. The surface is exquisitely adorned with scrolling floral motifs and acanthus leaves, some delicately intertwined with ribbon. A striking acanthus apron embellishes the lower section, while a decorative stretcher, echoing the elaborate design, reinforces the structure for added stability.

Standing on four elegant cabriole legs, the pedestal showcases finely detailed cartouches at the knees, each depicting allegorical representations of Spring and Summer.
