This unusual French mantel clock is crafted from the striking combination of rich black marble, lustrous green malachite, and glistening gilt decoration.
This distinctively crafted mantel clock is formed from striking black marble and lustrous green malachite. The body of the clock takes the form of a plinth: the square drum is raised on a flared and pierced black marble base and flanked on either side by curved, almost scrolled buttresses. The rich black marble is throughout engraved with scrolled gilt decoration and inset on occasion with panels of malachite. The circular clock dial is inscribed with Roman numeral hour marks and encompassed by a gilt metal band.
Below the clock dial is placed a silver metal plaque inscribed 'Presented to the Rev C W Penny by The New Dormitories, March 1876', while the clock dial is signed 'DENT, 61 Strand, London'.
