Crafted by Pierre-Philippe Thomire (1751–1843), one of the most distinguished French artisans of the early 19th century specializing in ornamental patinated and gilt bronze objects, this exquisite clock embodies the elegance of the Empire style.
Resting on an oval base adorned with delicate floral swags and supported by four graceful feet, the clock features a captivating scene. Two boys, dressed in classical attire, sit opposite each other, engrossed in their books. Between them stands a rectangular bookcase, its lower section filled with neatly arranged books, while the upper portion houses the clock. The timepiece, with its black Roman numerals and elegant hands, is crowned by twin oval rosette mounts, a finely cast laurel garland, and a detailed grape cluster. This composition serves as a tribute to education, a widely celebrated theme in the decorative arts of the period.
The reverse of the base bears the inscription ‘THOMIRE A PARIS’.
Exquisitely designed and masterfully cast, this exceptional antique clock is a remarkable addition to any collection of French decorative arts.
