This fine French wall barometer and thermometer is crafted from gilt metal and painted wood in the ornate Louis XV style. The piece is inset to the bottom with a large circular white enamel dial inscribed with various metrics for the measurement of weather conditions—the barometer—and is inset to the neck with a tall mercury thermometer set within a white enamel plaque. The wooden body of the piece is painted a deep blue, while the gilt metal mounts are wrought in the Rococo style: floriate and foliate forms predominate, such as the acanthus leaves that encircle the barometer dial or the Rocaille-like assemblage mounted to the bottom.
The barometer dial is signed indistinctly ‘Dommergues / 54 Boul … Paris’.
