Description

This delicately painted miniature on ivory depicts Reine Louise, or Louise of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, who was Queen of Prussia from 1797 to 1810 as wife of Frederick William III. Reine Louise was mother to the monarchs Frederick William IV of Prussia and Wilhelm I, German Emperor.

The portrait depicts Louise in an outdoor setting, the breeze rustling her clothing. Her portrait is painted in a fluid, cursory manner, with certain details—such as the eyes—rendered with fine precision.

The oval portrait is set within a gilt metal frame topped with a pierced tied-ribbon crown.

The front of the panel is indistinctly signed in blue pigment, the back is inscribed ‘Reine Louise’ in pencil, and the reverse of the frame is inscribed ‘Reine Louise’.
