Description

This charming porcelain cabinet plate depicts the balloon launched on the occasion of Napoleon’s coronation as Emperor in 1804. The balloon features the names of famous battles from Napoleon’s earlier career, including Marengo and Austerlitz. The rim of the white ground plate features a laurel wreath and a faux paper scroll reading ‘Modèle d’Aérostat qui a été executé pour le sacre de Napoléon en 1804’, or ‘The balloon model created for the coronation of Napoleon in 1804’. The manner of execution is painterly and fluid, granting the plate an expressive quality.

The front is signed ‘J. Siguier 1840’ and the back is marked for the maker.
