This fine ormolu bust was made by the French artist and scultpor, Ernest Rancoulet (French, 1870-1915). Rancoulet was a Neoclassical sculptor, best known for his mythological scenes, his depictions of athelets, and his representations of members of high society, exhibiting at the Paris Salon for a number of years where he produced many superb figurines and likenesses, such as this work.
Here, the sitter, probably envisioned as a 16th century nobleman of some sorts, looks towards the left. He wears a fine plumed hat, a high collared cape, and a typically aristocratic frilled ruff. He also wears an elaborately and extensively jewelled tunic. The piece is a remarkable example of this sculptor's great skill and artistry, bringing us a likeness that is full of character and vitality.
