Description

This exceptional mantel clock dates from the early 19th century, during the French Empire period. Made by Michelez (active 1811-1825), it is a supreme example of its type, crafted with remarkable skill and attention to detail.

The mantel clock is formed with central circular enamel dial, displaying the time in Roman numerals, and signed by its maker 'Michelez / rue St. honoré No. 128 à Paris'. The dial is set within the case in the form of a vase and decorated with classical motifs such as vines with leaves, garlands, acanthus leaves and other geometric patterns. There are two large scrolling handles terminating at the circular rim of the vase with dog's heads. The plinth base is square shaped with canted corners and conforming applied decorations.
