Gilt

The gilting technique consists of applying thin layers of gold leaf or paint to a surface. Gilt became particualry popular in the 18th and 19th Centuries, especially in the decorative arts. The two most prominent forms of gilt work are ormolu and giltwood, which involve gilting bronze and wood respectively. These were extensively used for antique fine arts and furnishings on account of their beautiful golden finish and expensive appearance.
