Style of Sèvres (French, founded 1738)
£28,000
This large and beautiful table is a giltwood and porcelain mounted guéridon in the ornate Sevres style, decorated with genre scenes and fine portraits.
Made in France in the late 19th century, this circular table is a giltwood and porcelain guéridon, made in superb Sevres style. Usually more commemorative in nature, these fine pieces often feautured large portraits of the dedicatee in the centre, surrounded by portraits of family members, however this work features a genre scene in the centre instead, with a variety of portraits around the outside.
It is made of richly carved and lavishly embellished giltwood, and is mounted with painted porcelain on the top and in smaller ovals around the edge. The piece is mounted on a large triangular base, beset with thrush-like vines and chains, and decorated with geometric scrolling patterns. The central genre scene depicts a musician in a country setting with a small audience including a seated young noble woman in attendance. A calming, gentle, and ornate piece, this beautiful guéridon is a superb example of late 19th century French artistry and crafstmanship.
