This beautiful piece is decorated using the damascening technique, whereby gold and silver is inlaid in scrolling, arabesque forms onto the surface of the plate.
This superb plate is decorated in the manner of Plácido Zuloaga, the Spanish metalworker who lived from 1834 to 1910 who is still renowned today for his perfecting of the technique of damascening. Damascening involves inlaying gold, silver, and other metals—usually precious—into a blackened steel or iron surface.
The present plate features a steel surface inlaid with silver and gold. The forms of the inlaid metal are wonderfully varied, ranging from coats of arms to scrolls of foliage to winding, intertwining arabesques. The plate is mounted with silver grotesque masks to its edges, the four masks issuing the sprawling arabesques that encompass the border. The centre features two coats of arms.
