The Goldsmiths Chair, hand-crafted in bronze, is the first in a collection of pieces produced by Tom Vaughan for the Queen Elizabeth Scholarship Trust. It was developed from an earlier design, commissioned by The Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths for their exhibition, ‘Made for the Table’.
Two strips of metal bend and cross where the seat meets the leg, the line at the back designed to support your form against its twisting form. Cast in bronze and mirror polished, the chair marks the beginning of a new direction for Vaughan, exploring the ancient craft of sand casting and the use of metal as a material, rather than the shaped wood pieces that he is associated with.
This pursuit of experimentation and highly skilled practice is extremely important to Vaughan and his team of craftspeople at his studio, allowing him to combine traditional techniques with exciting new design and manufacturing processes.
