Crafted with exquisite skill and with a superb eye for detail, these pieces are a set of three, framed intaglio molds, mounted on peach silk and placed within a later composite frame. They were made, one can say with a high degree of certainty, in late nineteenth century Italy, and are not dissimilar to pieces made during the time of the Grand Tour, an era of immense interest in the Classical world.
Each piece depicts shows in minute detail a figure, portrait, or small composition from classical imagery and mythology. Some pieces depict Roman gods, goddesses, others show figures who are likely famous general and emperors. On some of the larger, oval shaped pieces, there are exceptionally detailed miniature scenes from myth, with chariots, chase scenes and other subjects clearly visible. Several feature hand painted inventory numbers.
