Of an impressive size, this pair of Italian sculptural jardinières was hand crafted in late 19th century and is displayed on unusual carved wooden pedestals.
This pair of antiques is of an identical design. Expertly cast in bronze, three cherubs bear the weight of the campagna-form jardinières. The upper rim features a delicate bead-and-reel pattern, while the lower body is encircled by gadrooning. Two cherubs stand on either side of the large vase, their hands gripping the base, while the third crouches below, one arm raised in support. They rest on a rocky terrain scattered with branches, with water spilling from a toppled vessel. The casting is of exceptional quality, showcasing intricate details, from the cherubs’ finely sculpted features to the naturalistic texture of the rocks. Adding depth to the composition, each cherub faces a different direction, their focused gazes emphasizing the immense effort required to support the jardinières.
The bronze figures rest on grand wooden pedestals, each magnificently hand carved. The upper frieze is adorned with rosettes, followed by a bead-and-reel moulding. Below, a richly carved nature-inspired frieze enhances the design. The central section features a ribbon-tied laurel garland draped across the front and back, with a coat of arms carved on the front and a cartouche inscribed with the initials ‘MAS’ on one and ‘MIS’ on the other. The circular bases are left plain, finished with elegant banding.
One pedestal bears the inscription ‘M. Wilson. Dis / L. Miniati. Fece / Firenze 1874’.
Imposing in size and striking in design, this magnificent pair of sculptural jardinières is a highly desirable addition to both interior and exterior spaces, offering timeless elegance and artistic mastery.
