This beautiful silvered repoussé metal chair—a so-called ‘throne chair’—originates from India, and is heavily influenced by both English furniture making trends and the broader European Rococo, both of which were introduced to India by British and other European merchants during the 18th and 19th Centuries. Such chairs were to serve as thrones for Indian princes and potentates; the type became popular, and many were made for export to Europe.
The chair stands on four ornate tapered legs. The legs, the apron above, the stiles, splat, and arm rests, are all intricately repoussé: the metal has been hammered from the reverse to produce an embossed front surface and has subsequently been silvered. The effect is visually stunning, as distinctively Indian motifs adorn every surface. Moreover, the splat and armrest supports feature scrolling openwork. To the front, above the seat rail, are mounted two stylised Indian lions.
The seat cushion and backrest are upholstered with red velvet.
