The textile is a skirt or dress band, which was hand-made in India in the early 19th Century. The item has been created from saffron yellow satin and finely decorated with cerise (red-pink) silk chain-stitch motifs. These include stylised tigers, peacocks and elephants with howdahs, as well as female figures, and people being carried in sedan chairs and bullock carts. The band is also decorated with floral motifs and geometric patterns. These designs are more dense in the lower than the upper section of the textile.
