Description

This impressive pedestal is carved in simulated red porphyry, and features an octagonal base and square top, between which stretches the central column with spiral-cut twisted fluting. Scagliola, from the Italian for scales or chips, scaglia, is a type of fine plaster often used to simulate marble, either in art or in sculpture, and is used to great effect her to create a stunning porphyry-esque display piece.
