Italian coffee table with inlaid pietra dura tabletop
£12,000
This magnificent 19th Century Italian coffee table features a large and impressive floral still life executed in exquisite pietra dura, or inlaid marble.
This beautiful Italian hardwood coffee table features a remarkable tabletop formed from pietra dura, or marble inlaid to produce a pictorial scene. The table is supported by four square-profile legs, each of which culminates in a stylised scrolled capital. The four legs are raised upon and joined by a H-form stretcher, which is lifted from the ground by four ball feet. Above the legs, the table’s tall apron features a sequence of applied wooden abstracted cinquefoil arches.
The wooden tabletop is inset with a large rectangular black marble panel. This panel serves as the ground against which pietra dura scene is contrasted. The scene is comprised of two floral sprays visited by a bird and a flutter of butterflies, the figurative elements wrought from inlaid stones of a variety of colours ranging from deep, earthy greens to bright pinks and luminescent blues. The craftsmanship is exceptional, the result being a picture with variegated colour tones and shades.
