This beautiful Japanese porcelain charger is a superb example of Satsuma ware, a style within which vibrant polychrome enamels and extensive gilding abound.
This porcelain charger is fine example of Meiji period Satsuma ware. Produced throughout Japan during the latter decades of the 19th Century, Satsuma ware is characterised by porcelain with an ivory coloured ground adorned with polychrome glazes and lavish gilding—all of which were designed to appeal to the tastes of European markets.
The present charger features ivory-coloured porcelain adorned with rich polychrome glazes and ornate gilding. The central circular panel of the charger features a figurative scene of several birds perched on the branches of cherry blossoms and around the river-side ground, all within a traditional Japanese landscape. The scene is encompassed by a red-ground border finished with ornate gilding.
