Gérôme, Jean-Léon (French, 1824-1904)

French artist Jean Leon Gerome was one of the most important artists of the late 19th Century. Working primarily in the Academic style, and exhibiting frequently during his career at the Paris Salon, Gerome won many plaudits throughout his life as a painter and sculptor. His work can currently be seen on display at the most prestigious galleries worldwide, including National Gallery in London, the Musee d'Orsay in Paris, the Hermitage in St Petersburg, and the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles, California.

He began his artistic training when he moved to Paris in 1840 and studied under the master French painter Paul Delaroche. His training saw him produce many works of art which later became regarded as important contributions to the Neo-Grec artistic movement. During the 1850s, Gerome visited Egypt and was so taken by the country that he produced a number of works in the nascent and popular Orientalist style. As he rose to prominence, he produced a number of famous artworks depicting genre scenes, history paintings, Classical mythological works and a series of sculptures and decorations for vases.
