Hartmann, Johannes Jakob (Bohemian, 1680-1730)

Johannes Jakob Hartmann was an important landscape painter working in Bohemia in the early 18th century. Hartmann is known for his richly painted landscape with multi-figure compositions mostly of allegorical or biblical content.  He lived in Prague from 1702 where he studied the collections of Rudolph II and became known as the ‘Bohemian Brughel’. His style and subject matter were strongly influenced by the Flemish Renaissance painters including Jan Brueghel the Elder. As a Court painter to the Duke of Mansfeld, his paintings were always highly regarded. Today his paintings can be found in national collections, including the Belvedere in Vienna, Austria.
