The silver box has been crafted from silver filigree (silver wires which have been twisted into ornamental openwork patterns). The box has a rectangular body with canted corners, which is raised up on four leafy pointed feet. The rectangular body is covered by a hinged lid, which is closed with a clasp. The lid has a pitched centre, topped by a flower finial. The box is fully hallmarked.
This box is a beautiful piece of antique Judaica, which was created in Moscow in 1840. It was originally designed to hold Besamim spices, which are passed around during a Havdalah ceremony held on the Shabbat (seventh day of the week). Individuals are encouraged to smell the spices, to bring them comfort and prepare them for the working week ahead.
