Description

The large lidded ewer was produced in Naples in the 19th Century and is applied with shells, dolphins, mythological sea nymphs and other water creatures. The impressive mythical figural handle and trumpeting merman serves as impressive finials to this beautiful object. The ewer is supported on a deep navy blue ground waisted socle, surrounded by four entwined dolphins, all set on a square-form gilded base. The underside of the base is marked with the Capodimonte 'N' beneath a crown.

The ewer is executed in the manner of the famous Meissen 'Elements' jugs- particularly the 'Water' version- first produced by JJ Kaendler in the 18th Century.
