This stunning porcelain plaque is of a large size, and is notable for its superb handling of colour and light.

The artist depicts a woodland hunt. In the middle of the composition, a herd of deer can be seen sprinting towards the viewer, away from the pair of hunters that lurk in the background. The deer are seen in hasty flight, and their crouched poses and tense muscles effectively convey their fear. Particularly striking is the stag on the left side, whose head is thrown back in terror. The surrounding woodland is beautifully rendered, filled with a host of different ferns and shrubs.

The artist’s handling of colour is highly impressive. The rich brown tones of the deer and tree trunks are contrasted by the different green hues that make up the natural surroundings. The upper right corner is taken up by a cloudy sky, which nicely juxtaposes the otherwise busy scene.

The painting features a partially rubbed signature and date along the lower edge which reads ‘geno*r(?) R. Haak 1874’. The roundel is enclosed within a later added gilt-bronze frame, which adds a touch of elegance to the composition with its engraved inner border.

This porcelain plaque is of excellent quality, and the captivating scene would provide a wonderful focal point within an interior space.
