Large Chinese agate, nephrite and cloisonné enamel flower model

Showcasing fine Chinese craftsmanship, this flower model is made from a selection of high quality materials, some filled with important symbolism.

Extending upwards from the planter is a number of metal, thread-covered branches. To their bases are attached fine nephrite leaves, each one with engraved lines one would expect to see on a real leaf. The upper ends terminate with delicate agate petals, positioned together to create lush flowers. Each one includes a stigma crafted from bright orange beads. In addition to the fully bloomed flowers are also ones not yet bloomed. The carving of them is superb making this flower model very desirable. Agate is believed to symbolise strength and courage while nephrite can bring good luck.

The flower model sits inside an ornate cloisonné enamel planter. A variety of nature-inspired motifs is depicted using this complex technique. In the central cartouche is a cherry blossom with beautiful pink and white flowers set on a deep blue background. On it sits a charming bird. Around this scene, the planter’s body is filled with a light blue enamel ground with various cream-coloured scrolling motifs. More prominent flower and leaf depictions can also be spotted. The base as well as upper edges are gilt, adding a touch of elegance to the piece.
