Large Chinese hardstone and cloisonné enamel flower tree model with birds

This charming flower tree model was crafted in 20th century China from a selection of high quality materials, and adorned with meaningful motifs.

From the brown metal tree trunk extend several metal thread-covered branches formed to create the shape of a richly filled tree. Most branches terminate with expertly carved hardstone petals (most likely crafted from yellow jade) which make a fully bloomed flower, but some also terminate with flower buds. Delicate orange beads act as the stigmas, their vivid colouration beautifully standing out against the more muted yellow petals. Two exotic birds perch on the branchs among the flowers, making this model a very desirable objet d’art. Green jade is most likely used for the bird’s body with various other hardstones used for its beak, eyes and feathers.

The tree stands in a decorative planter, adorned with the use of the complex cloisonné enamelling technique.  Its body is decorated with various polychrome scrolls and prominent flowers. Pink and cream coloured chrysanthemums adorn the body and lip of the planter, vivid green leaves framing their petals. In Chinese culture, chrysanthemums are very meaningful symbolising happiness and vitality. The top and bottom edges are gilt, creating a beautiful contrast against the bright blue base colour.
