The porcelain plaque is painted with a scene of classically beautiful female nudes, all of whom cavort by a stream set within an intensely dark landscape. The manner of execution is academic: each nude evinces a different posture and pose, the collection of figures thus becoming a means by which the artist can demonstrate his skill at rendering the human anatomy. The darkness and selective lighting create an effect of chiaroscuro, which grants the body of each figure a sculptural, voluminous quality.
The painting is signed ‘Valentino’ lower right and is set within a carved giltwood frame.
