This large and exceptional piece is an Empire style ormolu and malachite mantel clock, made in France in the late nineteenth century, and cast with a variety of sculpture and reliefs in a mythological style.
The dial is set within a malachite case, and is flanked by ormolu sculpture depicting Jason and the Golden Fleece, one of the oldest and most enduring tales in all of Greek mythology. The relief plaques below and on the base also depicts scenes from the same tale.Â
Made in the Empire style in France, it combines, as many pieces in this manner do, French stylistic influences with a Neoclassical approach, creating a magnificent antique timepiece, rich in artistic decoration, and of high quality of craftsmanship and design.
