Depicting flowers in front of a wicker basket against a stone ledge, this beautiful vibrant and colourful still was executed by the French artist, Eugene Claude, in 1884, with great style and finesse.
With a simple composition depicting a variety of colours of chrysanthemums in front of a wicker basket, the harsh stony background contrasts with the vitality and vivacious quality of the flowers, the tones of which have remained beautifully intact. Bright white and pink tones dominate the front of the composition, softening into yellows and reds as the composition recedes, all brightly illuminated: the free, light, expressive brushstroke of the artist on full show.
The painting in mounted in a suitably ornate, beautiful carved giltwood frame. It is signed and dated to the lower left, 'Eug. Claude / 1884.'
