This wonderful cartel clock is modelled after an 18th-century design by Jacques Caffieri (1732-1806), a renowned French sculptor primarily known for his work in bronze. Some of his other notable creations include pieces for Notre-Dame in Paris and wedding gifts presented by Louis XV to his eldest daughter.Â
The clock is entirely crafted from ormolu, with an enamel dial topped by a striking sunburst motif. In front of the sunburst sits a charming putto, riding in Venus’s chariot pulled by doves. The clouds surrounding the scene are finely executed, lending a light and airy feel to the composition. On either side of the dial, large leaves extend upwards, drawing attention to the cherub.Â
The clock’s base features a delicate pierced floral panel, with Cupid depicted pulling drapery over the reclining Venus. The goddess of love is portrayed peacefully sleeping, while cherubs care for her. The piece terminates with an elegant acanthus leaf motif. Â
While Caffieri’s 18th-century clock is housed in the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, this example is a stunning antique tribute to the original design.Â
