£12,000
This fine sculpture depicts a joyful young couple and is supported by an integral Neoclassical style kingwood pedestal adorned with superb ormolu mounts.
This superb gilt spelter sculpture is by the French artist Ernest Rancoulet. Rancoulet was born in Bordeaux in 1870 and was renowned until his death in 1915 for his figurative sculptures, often in the Neoclassical style.
The present sculpture depicts a young amorous couple. The pair wear unsophisticated dress as they stride barefoot atop a naturalistic ground. The young man holds aloft a bent spray, beneath which the young woman happily stands. Both demonstrate active, expressive poses, indicating movement and vitality. The works, crafted from spelter, are warmly gilt.
The sculptural group is supported atop a Neoclassical style ormolu-mounted kingwood pedestal. The pedestal features a tapering shaft and a splayed foot. The top tier of the pedestal is draped with a frieze of floral garlands, while the centre of each side features a superbly cast foliate spray.
