Modelled in the form of an elephant, mounted by a rider wearing a feathered turban, this remarkable work is an Austrian porcelain group, made by the Imperial Amphora porcelain manufactory in Turn, in the early 20th century.
Signed 'Vogt' on the base, and impressed on the underside with the factory marks 'S214' and the stamp for the factory, it blends Orientalist and Indian influences, particularly with the elephant, to create a quirky, charming, and lively work, full of character, and emblematic of Austrian schools of production which were fascinated with the East, and regularly produced porcelain pieces with engaging and exotic subject matter.Â
