This impressive and captivating Orientalist musical picture clock was crafted in mid-19th century Europe for the Ottoman market.
The metal panel is exquisitely painted with a scene inspired by an artwork by Johann Peter Krafft (Austrian, 1708–1856). The original piece, titled ZrÃnyi's Charge from the Fortress of Szigetvár, was created in 1825 and depicts the 1566 Ottoman siege of Hungary. The painting in Mayfair Gallery’s collection closely resembles Krafft’s masterpiece but employs softer, pastel hues, resulting in a less dramatic yet dream-like interpretation. Intricate details, such as the rippling water and the finely rendered faces of the figures, showcase the artist's remarkable skill.
The painting is housed within a carved giltwood frame featuring a mounted clock. Rococo-style embellishments, including C-scrolls and floral motifs, enhance the elegance of the artwork. The clock itself is adorned with a white enamel dial painted with black Roman numerals, adding a functional yet decorative element to the piece.
A label on the reverse provides details of the musical selection incorporated into the clock’s mechanism.
Seamlessly blending art, horology, and music, this exceptional antique is a highly desirable addition to one’s collection.
