Of tall baluster form, these excellent vases have been crafted in the timeless Sèvres style. Each vase is decorated with a continuous painted frieze of a Napoleonic victory, accompanied by beautiful ormolu decorative mounts.
The vases are topped by elegant waisted necks, that sport an unusual green ground. The necks are parcel-gilt with medallions of eagles, and the initial ‘N’ for Napoleon within gilt cartouches. The contrast between the shining gilt and green shade is particularly pleasing. Each vase is capped by a domed lid with an ormolu pinecone finial. The design of the neck is mirrored on the splayed feet, and delicate beaded borders can be seen at both the base of the neck and foot. The entire composition is raised on square ormolu bases with paw feet and further gilt scrolling forms.
The bodies themselves are decorated with painted scenes of Napoleon and his troops. The scenes portray the famed military hero in moments of leadership, advancing his troops into battle on horseback. The quality of the painting is superb; the figures are rendered with verisimilitude against a cloudy sky. The scenes are signed by the artist ‘MAGLIN’.
The underside of the vases are marked ‘M. Imple de Sevres’.
Combining an unusual green ground with beautiful ormolu and painted decorative elements, this pair would be fitting for any keen collector of Napoleonic antiques.
