This impressive Carrara marble relief panel, depicting delicate putti, is inspired by the elegant simplicity of Classical Roman carvings. The panel is carved from Carrara marble, which has been prized since Roman times for its unmatched quality and sublime beauty. Carrara marble features in the Pantheon in Rome, for instance, while later sculptors, such as Michelangelo, utilised the marble in their art: Michelangelo’s David, for example, is carved from a single block of the sublime stone.
This panel is rectangular in form, centred by a semi-cylindrical font modelled as a bowl held aloft by a pair of putti, all executed in high relief. The surface throughout is finely carved with scrolling arabesques and other foliate forms.
