Of unassuming design yet of imposing presence and grandeur, this large marble pedestal was made in Italy in the late 19th century, probably for the purposes of displaying marble sculpture.
The design is a simple Neoclassical one, crafted to complement the piece placed on top yet not to overwhelm it. The marble ripples with white cracks which lend it a feeling of age and history, and the octaogonal base and mount afford it a simple and elegant geometry.
