By the Polish/French late nineteenth and early twentieth century artist Émile Eisman-Semenowsky (1857-1911), this elegant, rich, oil-on-canvas painting depicts a pair of women, young maidens, in a small rowing boat within an idyllic Classical setting. Their boat is draped with garlands of flowers, a swan approaches them from the front-left on the frame, and in the background to the left the scenery extends into an equally romantic and idealised Classical garden setting.
Overflowing with romanticism and impressions of an idealised idyllic dreamscape, the maidens are clearly at home in this setting, the flowers in their matching of those above the elegantly painted stone back-drop behind them. The brushwork and painterly qualities on display elegantly evoke the tranquil setting, and the playful, calm, nd whimsical nature of the scene is throughly demonstrated.
