Description

This exceptional artwork was painted by Adolf Schreyer (1828–1899), one of the foremost German Orientalist painters of the 19th century. Renowned for his ability to blend realism with emerging impressionistic techniques, Schreyer trained in Frankfurt, Stuttgart, and Munich. He gained widespread recognition for his equestrian and military scenes, captivating both military and equestrian enthusiasts with his dynamic compositions. His vibrant palette and masterful brushwork earned him the patronage of prominent collectors, including the Vanderbilts and Rockefellers, who supported his travels. Today, his works are featured in prestigious collections, including New York’s Metropolitan Museum.

The present scene depicts a group of noble Arab riders coming to an abrupt halt, with a rearing horse and its armed commander dramatically pointing into the distance. Schreyer emphasizes the commander's importance through his masterful use of lighting and colour. Surrounding him are several armed soldiers, their gazes fixed ahead. All are mounted on horseback, reinforcing the painting’s dominant equestrian theme. The Arabian horses are rendered with remarkable anatomical precision, showcasing Schreyer’s meticulous attention to detail, particularly in the depiction of their musculature. A skilled horseman himself, Schreyer studied horse anatomy extensively, which greatly informed his lifelike portrayals. His travels as a war draughtsman took him to Algeria in 1861, where he also learned Arabic—an experience that deeply influenced his Orientalist paintings.

The dramatic atmosphere is heightened by the cloudy sky, with a sea of billowing clouds adding depth and tension to the scene. Schreyer’s soft brushwork further enhances the moment’s intensity. The rocky terrain, painted in earthy tones of brown and green, evokes a sense of isolation from the wider world.

Housed in an elegant giltwood frame, the artwork is signed in the lower right as ‘Ad. Schreyer’.

With its striking focus on horses, this large and masterfully executed Orientalist painting is a highly desirable addition to any collection, particularly for those with a passion for equestrian art.
