Made in France in the 19th century, this magnificent mantel clock is cased in malachite, and mounted with beautiful gilt-bronze decoration, including the dials, feet, acanthus-cast plinth mount and of course the superb figurative sculptural finial of a female deity resting upon a globe.Â
Originally marble, the body of the clock has been replaced with a brilliant malachite veneer, that combines perfectly with the gilding and gives the piece a real exuberance and modern feel. The figure on top is that of Urania, the Greek muse of astronomy. The piece is made as a variation on a model, and is executed in bold and impressive Neoclassical and Charles X style. A stunning centrepiece, this mantel clock is a fine collector's piece indeed.
