This monumental bed is crafted in the manner of the Aesthetic Movement, a style current in European art and design during the latter decades of the 19th Century and the early decades of the 20th, when the present piece was produced.
The bed features a very large panelled wooden headboard mounted with three ormolu bas relief panels: the central panel of a female figure holding a baby, and the two flanking panels of winged cherubs carousing with musical instruments. The headboard features twin integral side tables, each topped with a black marble plateau and inset with a drawer above a single door cabinet below, the front of which is finished with fine floral marquetry. The end board of the bed features curved sides, further floral marquetry, a fine and large geometrical parquetry panel, and ormolu mounts in the form of a continuous floral frieze and two cherub finial surmounts.
