Large ormolu mounted Sèvres style porcelain clock set
Style of Sèvres (French, founded 1738)
£55,000
This superb clock set features wonderfully wrought Rococo style ormolu mounts set onto delicately painted and parcel gilt Sèvres style porcelain bodies.
This three-piece clock set is comprised of a central mantel clock and a pair of flanking en suite candelabra, all of which are crafted from Sèvres style porcelain mounted with ormolu wrought in the Rococo style.
The mantel clock features a shaped ormolu base moulded and finished with fine Rococo style detailing. The base supports a cobalt blue Sèvres style porcelain vase, which functions as the clock case. The vase is flanked by twin ormolu putti, is mounted to the shoulders with ormolu satyr head masks, and is surmounted by an ornate Cupid form finial. The cobalt blue porcelain ground of the vase is parcel gilt and is painted within a gilt cartouche with a scene of flying putti. This scene is centred by a circular dial inscribed with Roman numeral hour indices.
The en suite candelabra are similarly formed and decorated, each featuring a conforming vase painted with a fête galante scene, each vase set above an ormolu base and mounted with satyr head masks. Each candelabrum supports the springing of seven lights, each of the ormolu branches ornately scrolled and moulded with foliate detailing.
The painted scenes on the vases are signed ‘A. Daret’.
