This superb ormolu, or gilt bronze, clock set is comprised of a central mantel clock and a pair of flanking candelabra. The set is wrought in the ornate Rococo style, with the dominant decorative motif being the cherub.
The mantel clock features a blue tôle spherical drum, the front of which is set with gilt clock hands and Roman numeral hour marks. The drum is supported by an especially elaborate ormolu case, intricately shaped and mounted throughout with ormolu foliate swags, drapes, and, most strikingly, three large ormolu cherubim: the two flanking cherubim hold floral garlands, while the cherub above holds a flaming torch aloft. The trio is depicted in superbly expressive poses, deftly evincing a sense of movement.
The pair of flanking candelabra is similarly decorated, each featuring a cherub-form stem and ten ornately scrolled foliate branches, the top central branch set with a removal finial.
The movement of the clock is stamped ‘Popon / A Paris’.
