Description

Depicting an elegant and graceful aristocratic young lady, this fine painting by Herbert Sidney (British, 1859-1923), shows Miss Alice Addison Crofton, in a full length portrait, executed in oil-on-canvas.

Wearing a white silk dress, and surrounded by a large amount of feathery drapery, she sits in front of a palm-tree background; her hair is cut short, and she looks across the viewer's gaze to her left. Shown seated on a marble garden chair or throne, there was clearly an effort by the artist to show her in an ethereal, neoclassical, romantic style, adorned as she is with simple yet beautiful dress, suggesting her nobility but focusing on her graceful presence.

It is set within a carved giltwood frame, and signed and date to the lower right, 'Herbert Sidney / 1901,' and inscribed with the title on the reverse.

Frame: height 193cm, width 115cm, depth 6cm
