The megillah features a silver cylindrical case with a pointed tip and long handle. The ‘megillah’ refers to any of the five sacred books of the Ketuvim (the third section of the Old Testament) which take scroll form and are read in the synagogue at certain Jewish festivals. This megillah contains the Book of Esther, which is read on Purim. Purim celebrates Queen Esther and Mordecai’s success in thwarting the ruler Haman’s plan to annihilate the Jews in the Persian Empire.
Crafted from silver, this megillah is finely decorated with images and inscriptions illustrating the Book of Esther. It is also covered with ornamental filigree work (twisted silver wires). The Book of Esther is written in Hebrew on a scroll of parchment which can be pulled out from the silver case.
The megillah is signed in several places with the name of the maker, the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design in Jerusalem. This prestigious school was founded in 1906 by the acclaimed Jewish artist, Boris Schatz.
