By Contreras, Rafael (Spanish, 1826-1890)
£15,000
This historically significant plaster model, showcasing Moorish architecture, was crafted by the most renowned architectural restorer of the Contreras family.
This magnificent plaster relief model of the Alhambra was created by Rafael Contreras (Spanish, 1826–1890). Following in his father’s footsteps, Rafael became the official architect of the Alhambra in 1847, overseeing the restoration of the renowned palace. In addition to directing the restoration of this historic site, he also crafted plaster models of the facades he was restoring. Initially intended as blueprints for proposed construction work, these models soon became sought-after souvenirs for elite travellers touring Europe.
The scale model represents a façade within the Alhambra in Granada. The palace and fortress complex is one of the most celebrated monuments of Islamic architecture and among the best preserved. Cast from a mould, the model features a richly adorned arched entryway. A polychrome tile mosaic dado, skilfully crafted from plaster, flanks the arch, which is framed by intricate epigraphic, geometric, and foliate motifs. The upper portion of the model showcases three arched windows with delicate pierced decoration, complemented by additional carved ornamentation in harmony with the overall design. Highlighting the superb quality of the antique is the decorated entryway inset, often left plain in models of this type.Â
The panel is signed in the lower right corner ‘Modelos de la Alhambra por Contreras’ and is elegantly framed in a glazed wooden frame. On the reverse, a partial original paper label - commonly included in Contreras’ models - remains. This label likely described the model’s subject, serving as a keepsake for clients to recall their travels. A later stamp from a picture restorer is also present.
Wonderfully executed by a celebrated master, this plaster relief model is a highly desirable addition to any collection dedicated to architectural history.
