This beautiful and charming piece is a large bird model in cold-painted bronze, set upon an onyx base, by the famous Viennese maker and designer Franz Xaver Bergman.
Made in Austria, c.1910, it depicts a woodcock, and it is characteristic of Bergman's animalia output, one of the most popular and recognisable aspects of his foundry's work. The character, liveliness, and charm of the bird are wonderfully conveyed by the cold-painted bronze technique, and it is set upon an elegant onyx base. For a point of comparison this item, recently at auction, is a good example of a pieces such as this.
