This superb Limoges enamel plaque depicts a moment drawn from the Stations of the Cross. Christ has fallen under his burden of the cross, while Simon of Cyrene, who was compelled by the Romans to aid Christ in carrying the cross, attempts to lift the heavy load from atop the fallen Christ. Roman guards surround the pair, while a figure carrying a ladder anticipates the imminent crucifixion.

The plaque is executed in a painterly manner, with expressive brushstrokes and a bright and vibrant colour palette employed. The plaque is contained within a pierced and carved giltwood frame.
